THINK!

"This is just like child learning" Kertoo Ray Hunt kirjassaan Think harmony with horse.

I`ve had different people ask me how long it takes to break a horse. Well, I never rode a broke horse but then maybe Im a sorry hand. It seems to me that there is a better way of doing things so that the horse gets more sure. He learns something every day; he has to worry less about it; he gets more confidence in himself and me. It is the learning thing, to me. But as far as "breaking the horse," why, the first time you ride our horse he`ll coast you money. The second time you ride him he`ll hold his own, but the third day he is in a payroll.
These horses can do it; it`s just that simple if you can offer it to the horse. So, it has to come from the rider to the horse. The rider has to make lot of adjustments so that the horse can understand. Whether you are just starting a horse or working with a more advanced horse, a big key to remember is to always prepare ahead of time. In the boldest print of all, remember to THINK. Be aware and alert, visualize what you want. Realize you`re working with a mind. A lot of people think its just the horse., but there is a mind operating that horse. This mind gets him doing things because he wants to do them. Or you teach him to do things he doesn`n like to do but feels he had to do them anyway. Sometimes people try to teach a horse to do something he is not really capable of. It is important to recognize how much a horse can do and how much to ask of him. We need to recognize the smallest try, realize the slightest chance. Many of us don`t know a horse is trying to do something for us until he is already done it.

This is just like child learning. You want a child to write his name when he is going to school-that`s your goal. He is going to write his name as soon as he can. Whether it is the first day or the next month, it doesn`t make any difference. First he had to get ready to write-he has to prepare. It the child has never udes to bencil, he first has to learn to pick it up, what it means to pic it up, what it feels like. Then he gets to scribbling, making lines; then he begins to make a letters of some kind. Later he`ll put the letter together. We don`t expect the child to write his name the first day or two in school. As soon as he learns to sit down in class and listen to the teacher, he is not immediately expected to write his name. But we expect immediate learning from teh horse. We expect him go from kindergarden to eight grade, to high school, and to gollege whitout enough time, preparation, or consideration for this toughts of feelings. We often don`t even get him a learning frame on mind before we begin to train him. We don`t even have him relaxed and confident, where he can sit down in class and just listen. We skip all that preparation because we are so superior, or neglectful, or lazy. Because we haven`t prepared ourselves to recognize the horse`s feelings.

We`ll ride this horse a few times and we`ll kind of get hima to turn around today, and tomorrow he`s got to turn around better, and better the next day-and he`s got to do it. The first thing you know he won`t do it. I`v heard a lot of people say, "My horse was working bretty good yeasterday. One time I had him turning around pretty good but now he won`t." Well, what they have done is that they have overdone. The horse was trying to figure them out, but when the rider wanted more and better without even rewarding the horse for what he`d tried to do, the horse said, "This is the wrong thing to do because I get punished for this." So he quits. He bucks them off, or blows uo, or freeeze up, or rears. Then the rides says, "Oh, gee," and he quits doing what he was doing. The horse is the smart one-he learned to save his life anyway, whether the rider has learned anything from it or not.
So again you must learn to realize the slightest change, the smallest try that a horse make.
You know and he knows you know.
When you feel him start to position himself to turn around or to back up, or whatever, recognize this so you can reward his effort and build on it. Don`t make the horse do all the work. He shouldn`t have to figure you out and learn to get out of your way to get things done. I don`t think anybody should have to get out of anyone`s way in life-a horse or a dog or a anything else. I thikn there`s a way to communicate. We can learn to understund one another if we listen to one another, if we respect one another`s thought`s; we can work on things, figure them out so there doesn`t have to be any hassle in life. And again, we will try to do quite a bit of this with other human beings but we won`t put up much of a try with a horse.
My goal with the horse is for us to someday be in perfect harmony. It`s like a candle light at the end of a long tunnel. It gets brighter and clearer all the time. Even though I realize I will never hold it in my hand, working for this goal is very real and rewarding. Each step along  the way is its own reward.

Kirja Think harmony with horses, hämää simppelillä ulkomuodollaan.
